Hardness, chlorine taste and well-water chemistry are the three complaints we hear most. Each one has a different fix, and the only way to know which you have is to measure it.
Spots on glassware, crust on fixtures and dishwashers, and dry skin. Scale also costs a gas water heater efficiency; in the tests Pacific Northwest National Laboratory reviewed, the effect on electric tank heaters was negligible.
How hard is my water?Chlorine on city water, sulfur or metallic notes on a well. Chlorine taste is usually the cheapest to solve — an under-sink reverse osmosis system handles drinking and cooking water for a flat $829. On a well, a rotten-egg smell or iron is treated ahead of it first: RO does not remove hydrogen sulfide, and it needs iron up to 0.3 ppm. A softener takes clear-water iron up to about 2 ppm; a rotten-egg smell or heavier iron is the Panther’s job.
Reverse osmosis, installedArsenic, iron, manganese, nitrate and bacteria vary well to well in Yavapai County. The EPA limit for arsenic is 10 µg/L and some county wells are over it. A field meter cannot measure any of this.

That sits right around the 7 gpg threshold the U.S. Geological Survey classifies as “hard,” so the top of the city’s range crosses the line and the bottom does not. Private wells run harder: ADEQ’s study of 58 wells across the Prescott area averaged about 12 grains per gallon. That’s why scale forms on faucets, soap won’t lather, and gas water heaters lose efficiency without softening. A whole-house water softener is the standard fix — the hard-water guide has the measured numbers.

Yes. Private wells are the reason the lab panel exists.
Wells in Yavapai County can carry arsenic, iron, manganese, nitrate and bacteria in combinations that vary from one well to the next. The EPA maximum contaminant level for arsenic is 10 micrograms per liter, and some wells in the county exceed it. Nobody can tell you what is in your well without testing it — and a handheld field meter cannot measure arsenic at all.
We don’t drill wells or work down inside them.
We do service the pump and pressure tank when they sit above ground.
That means a jet pump beside the well or in the pump house, the pressure tank, the pressure switch, gauges, valves and the piping you can reach — and treating the water, which is one of our specialties. A new or deeper well, casing repair, or a submersible pump down in the well is a job for a licensed well driller or pump installer. The only way to know is a certified lab test — arsenic is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
A peer-reviewed compilation of 33,099 Arizona water samples found 43.6% of the 5,705 from Yavapai County above the EPA’s 10 ppb arsenic limit (Jones et al., Journal of Contemporary Water Research & Education 169(1):44–60, 2020), and all six Cornville private-well samples reviewed by the Arizona Department of Health Services were above it, ranging from 15 to 952 µg/L (ADHS Cornville health consultation). A typical residential water softener installation in Prescott takes 2 to 4 hours from arrival to system test.
If your home already has the loop pre-plumbed near the water heater, it is closer to 2 hours. Homes that need new copper or PEX tied in, or a drain line added, are closer to 4; a new outlet is electrical work, arranged separately. Installs are scheduled for mornings or early afternoons so the system is fully online before evening water use.

Work is performed under Arizona's handyman exemption, A.R.S. § 32-1121(A)(14), which limits any single project to less than $1,000 including labor and materials, and excludes work requiring a building permit as well as all natural gas and propane work. That is why the services above are priced the way they are, and why larger installations are listed for reference only.
